day 4: 6/22
How the Chemistry Elements Came to be
INSTRUCTORS: Jianyu W, Connor Z
In today's interactive class, students learned about what elements are, some major discoveries of important elements, and important scientific tools humans have used throughout history to discover new elements. We went through 3 main eras of element discovery: ancient discoveries before science, early chemical discoveries, and modern particle accelerator discoveries. We discussed the basics of electrolysis, spectroscopy, and particle accelerators and what made them powerful tools to discover new elements.
Chemical Reactions in Everyday Life
INSTRUCTORS: Alex G, Tony W
day 5: 6/23
An Emerging Threat to Soil Health in Ecosystems: Microplastics
INSTRUCTORS: Isaiah S, Cherilyn H
In this class, we explored the massive variety of effects that tiny pieces of plastic can have on the environment. These include their effects on the spacing of soil particles, soil microorganisms, soil nutrients, plants, animals, and even antibiotics.
